The European Union Satellite Centre (EU SatCen) notes a significantly increased demand for credible geospatial intelligence in its latest annual report for 2025. The centre provides dozens of geospatial products daily, significantly contributing to the EU's situational awareness in crisis areas around the world. However, SatCen has limited capacities, which may not be sufficient for an adequate response in a rapidly changing security environment and may negatively affect the Union's ability to detect and assess threats in a timely manner. As the national contact point of the Slovak Republic for cooperation with the EU SatCen, the Military Intelligence (MI) supports the Centre's initiatives aimed at expanding its imagery intelligence (IMINT) and geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) capacities. The cooperation between the MI and the EU SatCen is at a very high level in a wide range of areas, including the development of national IMINT and GEOINT capabilities. The MI welcomes the further strengthening of the EU SatCen capacities, which will mean a significant benefit not only for the Slovak Republic, but also for other EU Member States. Developing these capabilities is financially demanding, therefore their joint development at the European level represents a highly effective solution.
Further development of the EU SatCen should be primarily focused on increasing the center's ability to promptly respond to current threats in the field of defense and security, especially in the European geopolitical space - for example, through more intensive monitoring of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. It is also important to strengthen the responsiveness in crisis situations and the fulfillment of time-critical tasks. The long-term goal remains to obtain sufficient analytical capacities to process and evaluate a significantly higher volume of image data, whether shared by satellite assets of EU Member States or obtained from planned European satellite systems.
