Military Intelligence Honored Štefánik's Legacy

On the occasion of the Military Intelligence Day, members of the Military Intelligence honored the legacy of Milan Rastislav Štefánik at his final resting place.

M. R. Štefánik is considered one of our first intelligence officers. A pilot, scientist, soldier, politician, he was also a diplomat and to a large extent contributed to the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Among his greatest intelligence achievements can be included, that during World War I he informed French politicians and journalists about the difficult situation of Slovaks in the Hungarian Empire. He presented them with a proposal for the creation of independent states that could arise from the collapse of Austria-Hungary and outlined the new borders of Czechoslovakia (which were later confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon). He introduced T. G. Masaryk and Edvard Beneš to the highest society in France, with whom they founded the supreme body of the Czechoslovak resistance – the Czechoslovak National Council. He also managed to take further steps towards the establishment of the Czechoslovak army in France. Subsequently, in Russia and Romania, he organized Slovak and Czech prisoners of war into Czechoslovak combat units. He also managed to recruit 2,300 volunteers among the Czech and Slovak immigrants in the USA into the established Czechoslovak legions. By the end of the war, this army had almost 100,000 soldiers. After the war, he became the Minister of War of the newly formed republic.

Representatives of the Military Intelligence honored Štefánik's legacy, mission and contribution by laying wreaths at the M. R. Štefánik Mausoleum in Brezová pod Bradlom with full honors.
